With indications that the ANC may not secure a majority vote, interesting times lie ahead for the DA and the other main political parties.

The 14 days after the elections are declared are going to be a compressed period for the DA, with Multi-Party Chapter discussions to forge a way forward.

DA leader John Steenhuisen chatted to Caxton Local Media from the National Results Operations Centre this afternoon, sharing insights about the Multi-Party Chapter, formed by like-minded opposition parties last year to find a ‘viable pathway to a new national government to rescue South Africa ’. The DA was surprised with their performance in the Free State, where they have doubled their black vote and Steenhuisen said it was a ‘magnificent result for us’.

During the interview, he said the DA was the only party in Parliament that showed growth and that South Africa was now a full multi-party democracy.Steenhuisen elaborated and said the DA consolidated its support by securing double the number of black votes. The final metropolitan votes could mean a further increase in votes for the DA, according to Steenhuisen, and the party is eagerly awaiting finality.

In the interview, Steenhuisen explains how the next few days will determine the way forward with regard to coalition discussions.
