Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebrations graced Cape Town's streets on Monday after a two-year break brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The return of this traditional event, which started more than a century ago, was welcomed by the City's mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith. Celebrated annually for more than a century, Tweede Nuwe Jaar sees colourful, expressive performers, the Kaapse Klopse, parade through the Mother City.

The Tweede Nuwe Jaar festivities were preceded by the Cape Malay Choirs Road March on Saturday and Sunday, which added to Cape Town's New Year buzz.

TWEEDE NUWE JAAR: Cape Town minstrel troupes bring the music, dance and glitter back to city after two-year pandemic pauseCape Town’s annual minstrel carnival known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar was back in full force on Monday, 2 January 2023 after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19. Between 60,000-100,000 people lined the streets on a swelteringly hot day for one of the oldest cultural festivals of the Cape — a day of music, dance and flamboyant costumes — which is deeply rooted in the resistance to the painful history of slavery and colonialism. The event formally known as Coon Carnival? A bit of a racism problem in Cape Town apparently.
