Wanted rape suspect arrested in Bethlehem

The suspect was wanted in connection with the rape of a 78-year-old grandmother and her granddaughter, 11, who were allegedly attacked while asleep at their home in Fouriesburg, south of Bethlehem, on March 17, Free State South African Police Service spokeswoman Thandi Mbambo said.

SAPS Bethlehem crime intelligence, family violence, child protection, and sexual offences , and K9 unit officers followed up on information received, which led them to a new development area in Bethlehem where the suspect was arrested on Friday night, Mbambo said. Bethlehem policing cluster commander Maj-Gen Jan Tsotetsi commended the officers for their “swift coordination and response”.

“Moreover, we thank members of the community for being a major part of this concerted effort. With their help, we are on track to protect women, the elderly, and children,” Tsotetsi said.
