You have to have connections to get cigarettes and alcohol in the Covid-19 lockdown, as owners of bottle stores, taverns and shops have resorted to selling secretly from their homes – at exorbitant prices

The business of selling cigarettes and alcohol has not stopped and most retailers in townships have resorted to delivering to their clients.

“You need to know the right people and just make a call and your stuff will be delivered. Most shop owners have run out of the brands we know, but we buy new brands. I’m comfortable with some of these brands because I have seen them in Mozambique,” Mabena said.“A 20-pack of Courtleigh, which cost me R45 to R48 before the lockdown, went up to R100 after lockdown. Sharp was R20 a pack, but now it is R60. A single Sharp cigarette is R4. The sellers are making a killing,” said Mabena.

Mabena said he knew of Mbombela-based liquor sellers who had transported their stuff 120km or so to Nkomazi. He had bought liquor at high prices. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the number of people arrested on charges of violating lockdown regulations, particularly cigarettes and alcohol, was “too high”.
