Our democracy needs more free speech, regardless of how it makes the government feel. Any attempt to quell either Professor Glenda Gray’s or any other expression is a direct attempt to take SA back to a darker form of repression, writes Riaan Salie

Critical dialogue is the constitutional responsibility of all South Africans, particularly those in positions of power.Some argue that limiting harmful rhetoric is justified because it protects society, but it would serve us well to recall the times when the apartheid regime enforced censorship.There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires.

Former president Nelson Mandela said: “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires.” Ultimately, section 16 of the Constitution exists to protect South Africans from political despotism.

The question is; Is Free Speech only applicable to government or to any institution of power? With increase social media interactions, people have lost their jobs for their opinions. What is that?

Excellent article RiaanSalie! Freedom of speech is enshrined in the Bill of Rights, a fundamental right which ensures that ideas are voiced and challenged. The very fabric of a democratic society.
