CAPE TOWN - The man convicted of the rape and murder of 19-year-old University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana in 2019, was back in court on Friday this time for alleged attempted rape in 2014.
Luyanda Botha, currently serving a life sentence, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Friday.Prosecutors said Botha found the victim taking a bath and attempted to rape her but she fought him off. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the victim laid a complaint, but after attending initial court proceedings she disappeared and the matter was then struck from the roll.
"He was arrested for another case, that well-publicised case of Uyinene Mrwetyana. After that, the victim in this case went to the police station to find out what was happening with her own case. It's when the case was re-opened and it was back on the roll." The State said Botha's alleged girlfriend at the time of the incident, was set to testify when the matter is back in court on 14 June 2024.
