US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen will travel to Senegal, Zambia and South Africa during the next two weeks, as the US aims to strengthen ties with a continent that has been the focus of Chinese trade and investment for years. | City_Press

Yellen is the first member of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet to embark on a lengthy African trip, after Biden last month announced more than $15 billion in two-way trade and investment deals, saying the US was “all in” on Africa’s future.

The US’s new approach includes promising and delivering significant investment and trade partnerships, not just humanitarian aid and security assistance, say administration officials. Chinese trade with Africa is about four times that of its trade with the US, and Beijing has become an important creditor by offering cheaper loans – often with opaque terms and collateral requirements – than Western lenders. However, some African countries, including Zambia, have soured on Chinese lending and are seeking alternatives, say experts.

Yellen’s time in Zambia will coincide with a visit by IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva, although the fund’s sources said the trips were not planned at the same time.
