Secretary of state Michael Pompeo on Tuesday called China’s crackdown on Uighurs and other minorities in the Xinjiang region a genocide, stoking tensions with the country less than a day before President Donald Trump’s term ends.
Pompeo cited sterilisations, indefinite detention and forced labour in Xinjiang and called on “relevant judicial bodies” to hold those responsible to account. The Trump administration has repeatedly levelled sanctions on China over its treatment of Uighurs, and the designation had been widely expected.
China vehemently rejects criticism of its treatment of Uighurs in Xinjiang, saying it respects human rights and that its efforts are aimed at deradicalising extremists and countering terrorism and separatism.
