US defence chief opposes Trump’s plan to use Insurrection Act to deploy troops

“The option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now,” Esper told a news briefing.Esper's news conference did not go over well with either the president or his top aides, an administration official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Esper said he regretted using the term “battlespace” this week to describe areas gripped by protests.
