This was the focus of a Wednesday’s debate aimed at conflict prevention across the continent.

A United Nations Security Council debate in New York has focused on “silencing the guns in Africa”, which is part of the African Union’s agenda.

Towards this end, joint UN-AU efforts have concentrated on strengthening the continent’s ability to detect and defuse crises before they escalate. Di Carlo added that resilient societies were key to this coordinated effort, adding that building strong institutions, good governance and encouraging inclusive politics were paramount.

However, she pointed out that numerous challenges remained, such as the “marginalisation of certain groups from political processes, the prevalence of a ‘winner-takes-all’ approach, corruption, and the mismanagement of natural resources”.
