UCT Vice-Chancellor MamokgethiPhakeng has come under fire for a remark on social media that a prospective student should go to another university which would accept her “level of results”. CapeTimesSA

Cape Town – UCT Vice-Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng has come under fire for a remark on social media that a prospective student should go to another university which would accept her “level of results”. The normally social media savvy Phakeng was interacting with prospective UCT students and parents leading up to a scheduled question and answer session on her personal Instagram page on Sunday.

In the process, she also received questions from matriculants regarding criteria for university admission, particularly UCT’s processes. Instagram user Leedlaminii asked: “Can you improve the chances of being accepted into UCT with your Grade 12 March, June, September and final report if your Grade 11 final report isn’t so great.”

Phakeng replied: “My suggestion is that you go to another university that will accept your level of results. Don’t stress yourself.”

Tshepho_Mokwele CapeTimesSA Context!!!

CapeTimesSA Her response needed someone to read it with an understanding, and after one did so they would understand her. The response had no any connotation. She was saying The student can still go study somewhere and still achieve her dreams...only if studying at UCT was not a dream too

CapeTimesSA At least she's being honest. At UKZN they don't tell you this. You keep your hopes up for nothing.

CapeTimesSA When did she came under fire when the whole country has fire extinguishers for her ?

CapeTimesSA If your Gr11 results weren't good it puts u at a disadvantage when selection is made prior to final matric results. I think VC was correct on her response

TheCapeArgus CapeTimesSA If the potential student cannot handle that type.of honesty then he/she will never survive varsity

CapeTimesSA Truth hurts, I don't know what is wrong with the VC's response. It is an honest advice so please let us move on.

CapeTimesSA Unnecessary

CapeTimesSA Amanga lawo.

CapeTimesSA What’s wrong with that. Are we raising low EQ emotional regards nowadays?

CapeTimesSA Every qualification and of course university has its own admission criteria. Professor Phakeng gave the best and honest advice any prospective student can get!

CapeTimesSA Kwasuka lokho!!

CapeTimesSA That was good honest advise though.

CapeTimesSA Universities has different acceptance standards don't they?

CapeTimesSA She is only a human. One mistake and haters are all over her. Please.

CapeTimesSA Hey fok. Leave this woman alone. She's human. Tsek and she apologized. Why you want to drag her here.

Carl Niehaus weeps about ‘smallest crowd ever’ at ANC’s birthday rallyThe ANC's Northern Cape leader, however, shared photos of packed stands. NC is the smallest Province in SA in terms of population. Besides, ANC may have been considerate by saving costs by not bussing in supporters from all over the SA & our economy is in the worst shape than it has ever been.
