The quarter was one of the ‘most challenging periods for investors in the last 10 years’, CEO Ralph Hamers said

Profit in the three months ended June rose 5% to $2.1bn. That compared with $2bn a year earlier and lagged expectations for a 19.8% rise to $2.4bn in a poll of 19 analysts compiled by the bank. Earnings at the Zurich-based bank were helped by the sale of a real estate joint venture in Japan that yielded a one-off gain of more than $800m.

Advisory revenue was down 30% and capital markets revenue down 71%, which the bank attributed in part to lower business for initial public offerings.

Mbeki's rebuke of Ramaphosa is not only timely, but necessary — the president must act on his promisesThe timing of former president Thabo Mbeki’s public criticism of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s performance could not have been worse for the incumbent, says the writer. Mabeki still in power when SA had a lot of residual left from the white supremacists. The former president T. M. Mbeki is amazing because when former president J. G Zuma was selling our beloved country to the Guptas he was so silent even thought that he lost his voice.
