Major social media companies, including Twitter, assisted the Hawks in tracking down the alleged 20 instigators of violent looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in July 2021.

Major social media companies, including Twitter, helped the Hawks track down some of the alleged instigators of violent looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng that shook South Africa in July 2021.detailing an elaborate year-long investigation leading to the arrest of 20 suspects who appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 12 August 2022.

According to the South African Special Risk Insurance Association , it was the most costly incident of rioting in the world in the past decade, surpassing the damages caused in 20 US states in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing by police in May 2021. “This was a lengthy investigation that mainly relied on information being supplied by the owners of social media platforms,” the source said, without naming any other social media companies than Twitter.

Several high-profile individuals — including Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, one of former president Jacob Zuma’s daughters — used Twitter to call for or voice their approval for the violence.According to the report, several witnesses had implicated Zuma-Samundla through her posts on social media. Still, Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya could not confirm whether she was included among the additional suspects.

While this ensures optimal privacy during communication, it makes it difficult to determine when users abuse the platform to facilitate criminal activities.

Africa Free Trade Area Launches Digital HubThe African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has launched a digital platform aimed at easing trade in Africa, writes Susan Nyawira for Capital FM . The platform dubbed - The AfCFTA Hub - is an interconnect clearing house for national government, intergovernmental, private, and public digital and partnership platforms to link together all businesses to drive the success of the free trade area. The hub is designed to grow into a single, trusted directory of the services needed to navigate the AfCFTA for small players, thereby making the AfCFTA the most inclusive free trade area in the world. The major components of the AfCFTA Hub platform include - in addition to the ProPer supply chain security system - e-logistics, a digital transactions marketplace, regulatory harmonisation, and a trade facilitation mechanism to minimise blockages in free and open trade technically referred to as non-tariff barriers. The AfCFTA provides the opportunity for Africa to create the world's largest free trade area with the potential to unite more than 1.2 billion people in an economic bloc with a gross domestic product valued at least U.S.$2.5 trillion and usher in a new era of development.
