Togo opposition leader files suit over election result

Togo lese opposition leader Agbeyome Kodjo says he has filed a suit to overturn the result of presidential elections in which he placed a distant second to incumbent Faure Gnassingbe .

Kodjo, a former prime minister, won 18.37% of the vote on Saturday and Gnassingbe 72.36%, according to preliminary official results. Turnout was put at 76%.Some 300 international observers were deployed, mainly from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) and the African Union (AU), many of whose members supported Gnassingbe.

Gnassingbe, 53, took the helm in 2005 after the death of his strongman father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who seized power in a coup in 1967.
