shows that moderate-to-severe food insecurity affected 23.6% of South Africans in 2020, while almost 14.9% experienced severe food insecurity. A state which exists when people are undernourished due to the physical unavailability of food, their lack of social or economic access, and/or inadequate food utilisation. from the department of environment, forestry and fisheries shows that over 10 million tonnes of quality food are lost or wasted throughout the supply chain annually.

Foodfoward SA , an organisation that works to help address widespread hunger in the country, says the obscene amount of food ‘waste’ or surplus food presents a massive opportunity to curb food insecurity that affects around 30 million people, half of the population. “Consumers have the perception that food loss and waste is only expired and rotten food, when, in fact, the average South African household throws away 6kg of perfectly edible food per week.

The organisation says that it provides wholesome meals to over 950 000 people in disadvantaged communities across the country using “a reliable, sustainable food distribution model that collects quality donated, within-date, surplus food from farmers, manufacturers and retailers”. In its report, Stats SA says that the country’s high unemployment rate contributes to the food insecurity.

Question is how. Its not that simple. For example, when a product is past 'sell by date' or 'use by date', what can you do with such a product? Who will accept responsibiluty if someone get sick or die from such a product? And not to even think of the political consequences
