🔒 Finance Minister Tito Mboweni sees a reduced wage bill as a key reform to get the state’s finances back on track.

Tito Mboweni said the government still needed to discuss these and other solutions with labour. An update will be announced in the 2020 budget.

The proposals to address the problem would cut the public sector wage bill — which accounts for 35% of the consolidated national budget. “After adjusting for inflation, this is more than double the number of civil servants earning more than R1-million in 2006-07.”

The wage bill is a start! Systematic looting and incompetence should also be tackled!

Govt: we giving you 4% Workers: we want 10% or we strike. Govt: it’s ok we were just joking have 10%.

Reducing or getting rid of corruption is the best route to take. Not what you are busy chasing.

I'm very disappointed in our finance minister. I expected more from him, clearly the problem far exceed the public sector wage bill. As an economist he should know and do better. The biggest problem is systematic waste and corruption. If he can't do the necessary he must resign.

I get worried when a Minister beats the same old drum. This is a 5 year old discussion and if he does not have a concrete solution to it he must just look for another area to reduce government expenditure.
