On November 6, the Red Bull Box Cart Race returned to SA, with Cape Town on deck to host this comical day in the sun. Bo Kaap was buzzing with crew members dressed in over-the-top outfits and then, of course, there were the rides they had all constructed in the hopes of walking away as the victors.
The block was hot in more ways than one as a large platoon of police patrolled the event within the parameters of the festivities, while the metro police lurked on the blocks beyond the threshold. Besides their serious demeanour, this day was all about laughter and not taking oneself too seriously.
The day was won by an entertaining team of five who call themselves The Potjie Boytjies. The day saw 50 teams head down the track and one of these teams even had comedian Jason Goliath at the helm. The crowd was really into the spirit of things and most of the teams would park their elaborate whips at the bottom of the track for people to remark on the design and take pictures with their favourite creations.
