A landmark special by the History channel, premiering tonight, traces the heritage of South Africans using their DNA. the_rantingpony watched the first episode and chatted to East Coast Radio presenter Minnie Ntuli about finding royalty in her bloodline

, takes four strangers, tests their DNA and then, based on the results, takes them on a quest to discover exactly where they come from and the history that’s shaped who they are. It’s a journey of discovery and enlightenment, in which science is used to reveal our history.

Then there’s 35-year-old white Jason McCall, who describes himself as committed to South Africa and says he tries his best to do community outreach work on a regular basis. McCall was adopted by his stepfather, who has Irish heritage. He knows it’s not biological, but he would love to find Irish heritage in his bloodline.
