When an average high-schooler gets a taste of the afterlife, he’s asked to join a mysterious group that calls themselves Counters, and somehow ends up the newest recruit on a team of soul-collecting demon hunters. Many films and TV shows have focused on the afterlife and human demon hunters fighting evil spirits while being endowed with supernatural abilities.
Seven years before the possession, So Mun survived an accident that killed his parents and left him with a permanent leg injury. Despite his disability, and even before he is a Counter, Mun has a hero spirit when he stands up to school bullies to protect his friend. Perplexed by the changes to his body and seeing Wigen in his dreams, the Counters search and find him. He is brought to the noodle shop, where he meets the other Counters.
This series gripped me from the first episode; what was immediately appealing to me was the camaraderie and kinship between the characters. I also liked that the show has unconventional superheroes as they ranged in age and gender. Mae-ok is the healer and 'mom' of the group. Mo-tak is rough around the edges and has super strength. Ha-na is the sole survivor of her family and possesses the ability to read memories.
In terms of the villains, the writers really kept the tension well. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Watching team good versus team bad try to outwit and outlast each other was riveting; I never once got bored. The human and non-human villains were both driven by power. The evil spirits aimed to become immortal and invincible. On the other hand, the human villains were driven by political power and greed.
