Opinion | The fiddling. The tiptoeing: Is Cyril Ramaphosa fit to govern, asks Yonela Diko.

Roman Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca once said: “He who dreads hostility too much is unfit to rule.” Unfortunately, avoiding conflict, reassuring everyone and attempting an impossible broad consensus even when a moment demands a clear choice, is the quintessential governing approach of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

A leader must never tip-toe on policy, where his voice ebbs and flows depending on the easier way out. This leads to the dissatisfaction and disappointment of everyone as people realise the leader’s lack of appetite to make the hard decisions. Hard resolutions are not new to the ANC, but fiddling around them is. In August 1994, Thabo Mbeki published a document entitled Unmandated reflections – effectively his governing manifesto. It stated government priorities.

Immediately the opposition parties, particularly the National Party and Democratic Party, began to “wage a sustained campaign” aimed at convincing “the public that the ANC government had no capacity to govern, was incompetent and had no internal coherence within itself”, just as Mbeki had predicted.

Mbeki saw all these reactions with his historical analysis, and things happened as he had predicted. He was ready for it and would battle it to a draw, building the strongest foundation of any country, leaving a state that was the envy of the world, even if 15 years after publishing those reflections, the forces would finally get the better of him.Ramaphosa needs his own unmandated reflections in order to stamp his authority.

He is capable of governing and taking our country forward...unfortunately some people wants to derail his plans...He is my President

I’m not following the propaganda war between him and other gangsters but I have no cooking clue what he’s actually doing right now. The country needs leadership and I haven’t seen any from him.

My short answer is he must step down.and allow David Mabuza to lead.we can't have President who's got secrets.

No he is not since he only does what his funders tell him to do.

Ramaphosa was captured in advance, so he finds himself leading a party whose policies his handlers don’t agree with, now he is unable to move. Short answer to your question: No, he can’t govern. He can’t resign either, as his handlers want him as president.

All what is happening to him is the ancestors of the freedom fighters and the miners killed at marikana, he is too western can't lead this country, this is a simple sign that after this cases his term is over cause he is dishing for the enemy instead of dishing the poor civilians

A fair analysis. Ramaphosa is so indecisive it's annoying. This is not the type of leadership South Africa needs right now.

Excellent read 👌

Thank God I just scanned through, this is pure trash! You looking for overnight, takeaway solutions, as usual. SA challenges are more systemic & deep more rooted. Job summit, investment drive, land report, state capture etc if this is not groundwork required first, then shush!!

obviously not not fit, beside lacking th natural leadership traits, he is severely compromised already

He is not fit to be the president of this country maybe been a primier for him it's good

He is too bias, and he is not fit to rule
