The government says six ‘key arrests’ have been made — including the instigators of last week’s violence and looting — but it has mentioned no names yet.

Just over two weeks after he flanked Jacob Zuma in front of Zuma’s Nkandla home where the former president addressed a gathering of supporters before his imprisonment a few days later, media practitioner and former DJ Ngizwe Mchunu turned himself in to the police.

Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni updates the media on Monday, 19 July on measures being taken after looting and unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in the aftermath of former president Jacob Zuma’s arrest. Police Minister Bheki Cele talks to a Phoenix resident while in Bhambayi, bordering Phoenix, on Saturday 17 July. The minister made several promises to Durban residents which included investigating the role of police during the unrest.

Meanwhile, the government is still grappling to find agreement over what to call last week’s violence and looting, which could cut GDP growth by 0.7%, according to a forecast by the head of capital markets research at Intellidex, PeterA police helicopter hovers over the township of Alexandra while army personnel and police confiscate stolen goods after looting and vandalism in parts of Johannesburg.

Mapisa-Nqakula, however, appears not to have received the memo on Friday, when Ramaphosa in an evening address sold the failed insurrection narrative to the nation. There were even hints in his address that it could have amounted to an attempted coup.
