On this National Day of Prayer for relief from Covid-19, let us be reminded of how ubuntu and our Christian values can help us overcome this challenge as a united nation, writes Anglican archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba

The National Day of Prayer today will remind South Africans that the situation the country faces this year is much the same as that faced by Christ’s apostles more than 2?000 years ago. We face an economic collapse and the glaring inequalities which the pandemic has revealed, as well as the agonising uncertainty about the shape of the post-pandemic world, leave us feeling vulnerable and scared. The choices are not easy. We are spending too much time debating issues which do not concern our top priority – saving people’s lives.

As we navigate the way ahead, we need to keep our focus on fighting corruption, creating equality of opportunities, bringing water and proper sanitation to schools, repairing school windows ahead of the cold winter months, and improving the quality of services provided by government. As faith leaders, many of those we have listened to have taken the initiative to unite that which is disparate in business, in politics and in our faith communities.

The alternative is to perpetuate the greed and inequalities of the past, to betray the expectations of the poor and frustrate the designs of God for our times. This will render the hard learnt lessons of the pandemic uselessBut if Pentecost teaches us one thing, it is that the great reshapers of history are not always the towering figures on the platforms of the world.
