A historic homestead and farm in the Constantia suburb of Cape Town, which dates back almost 300 years, is on the market for R35 million.

Belle Ombre, meaning "Beautiful Shade", is a property in the Cape Town suburb of Constantia, currently on the market for R35 million.

Its history dates back to 1728, and some of the homestead's original charm, like yellowwood beams and Oregon doors, remains.The 5,257m2 corner plot on which it stands features pools, a tennis court, guest cottage, and treehouse. A 51-hectare plot of land granted to two brothers, Jan Zacharias and Jan Christoffel Beck, in 1728 encapsulates the early history of one of Cape Town's oldest suburbs. The area is the birthplace of South African wine, with its iconic vineyards still a staple of the Mother City's attractions.Remnants of this rich history remain, like the Belle Ombre property currently on offer through Seeff.

. These changes included adding a hearth, replacing the thatched roof with a flatter Welsh slate roof, adding two chimney stacks, and changing the front façade to French windows. The original farm Belle Ombre – meaning"Beautiful Shade" – remained in the Rathfelder family until it was subdivided in 1970, according to an application to Heritage Western Cape., the five-bedroom Belle Ombre house occupies a 5,257m2 corner plot at 54 Rathfelder Avenue. The homestead still maintains its original yellowwood beams and Oregon doors.
