In Cape Town, authorities have issued a cease-to-work directive for a property in Summer Greens where construction is underway without proper authorisation. Over the weekend, community members were surprised to learn that seven flatlets and shops were being built on the same property.

On Friday, residents gathered to stage a protest in front of the house, urging the new owner to halt construction activities.

‘People are angry and frustrated because this area used to be a beautiful community, but what is happening is not on.’ ‘In this case, the person is building seven rooms or flatlets on one property. When there is no plan, no infrastructure indication as to the kind of capacity that these things are going to have to serve, it puts a huge strain on the sewer system and water supply system. The City can’t plan infrastructure upgrades because they are not aware of it because there has been no application, the actions that are being taken are illegal. It’s really a problematic matter.
