A UN-led appeal for funding to help the people of Sudan raised $1.5 billion on Monday as UN chief António Guterres warned that the country was descending"into death and destruction" at breakneck speed.

"Before this conflict erupted, Sudan was already grappling with a humanitarian crisis. This has now escalated intoThe UN Secretary-General insisted that it was the international community's duty to support the people of Sudan and neighbouring countries.and the looting of humanitarian supplies, appealing to the warning parties to protect civilians and enable humanitarian action, in line with international law.

What Next For Sudan as End of 72-Hour Ceasefire Looms?Sudan's latest ceasefire ends on June 20, 2023. Since the April 15, 2023 outbreak of hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) the country has seen tremendous human suffering and death, worsening existing humanitarian needs. In recent developments, Sudan's Vice President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council Malik Agar hailed Egypt's participation in the initiative to end the crisis. Meanwhile there are also 150,000 Sudanese refugees waiting on Egypt's border with Sudan. Recently, East African leaders through the Intergovernmental Authority (IGAD) met in Djibouti. IGAD member countries include Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda. Eritrea rejoined in the week of the conference. A donor summit will be held in the coming weeks to discuss among others, food aid for Sudan. There are also an increase in the disappearances of people in Sudan - thus far over 200 people have been reported missing - among them are 15 women who have been taken.
