'Staggering': RAF concerned as youth account for almost half of crash claims

The Road Accident Fund is deeply concerned at the over-representation of youth in road accident statistics, saying those aged 15 to 34 accounted for a"staggering" 44% of claims lodged from 2020 to 2022.

During that time, the RAF paid out about R43 billion for injury benefits to young accident survivors aged 15 to 34, an average of about R14 billion a year. It also paid a total of R2.86 billion for death-related benefits during the same period, at an average of R956 million per year. The average number of youth-related claims registered per year across the three-year period was 21 475 with the average amount per claim being almost R2.57 million. Furthermore, 63% of claims registered over this period were for males, 36% were for females, and 1% unknown.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
