South Sudan: Leaders to Remain in Power for Another 24 Months SouthSudan

South Sudan leaders announced on August 4, 2022 that the country's transitional leadership will stay in power for another 24 months to complete the political, security and electoral reforms needed, to move the country forward.

The move is likely to anger the international community which has been unhappy with the delay in ending the transitional period which was implemented in February 2020. In July, the U.S. pulled out of the country's peace process, saying the sides had failed to make the necessary reforms to end the political and security crisis.

The government, led by President Salva Kiir and his deputy Riek Machar, also postponed elections to 2023 and blamed the postponement for the lack of a permanent constitution. Civil society groups in South Sudan agree that conditions on the ground remain volatile in parts of the country, and does not allow for a free, fair and peaceful election.
