Eskom News

South Africans are paying significantly more for electricity than they used to, largely due to Eskom’s deteriorating performance over the past decade.

South Africans will pay over five times more for electricity in 2025 than in 2010, as Eskom has implemented multiple above-inflation increases in its electricity tariff while its performance has declined.

This is only set to be exacerbated by reduced demand for Eskom’s electricity from households and businesses as they have adopted alternative energy sources, such as rooftop solar. A decline in revenue would spell even tougher financial times ahead for the utility, and some difficult decisions may need to be considered, such as business restructuring and perhaps even retrenchments

The move to small-scale renewable energy by households and businesses has left Eskom with a higher percentage of non-paying customers. They found that Eskom’s skyrocketing finance costs, which have more than doubled over the past decade, have been a primary driver of the increase in electricity tariffs, while the utility’s other costs have increased slightly above inflation.

South Africa: ANC-Aligned Cosatu Confirms It Is an Enemy of Unemployed South AfricansPress Release - A statement released yesterday by the ANC proxies in labour federation COSATU is a timely reminder that the ANC alliance - composed of the ANC, COSATU and the SACP - is the primary enemy of the 10 million unemployed people in South Africa. What a nonsensical article. It does not even quote COSATU’s statement nor give a chance for COSATU to comment. If this is an op then your platform should say so and indicate who is the author. Otherwise this platform is little better than graffiti on a bus station.
