Social development staff hijacked and shot at in Khayelitsha

The Western Cape minister of social development, Sharna Fernandez, has condemned the hijacking of two employees based at the Khayelitsha Department of Social Development office this week.On Wednesday, a community development worker was hijacked and shot at while on duty. He has since been discharged from hospital. On Thursday, a social worker was hijacked in Khayelitsha while en route to her office.

Five attacks on DSD staff have been reported since the start of the year. The incidents occurred in ‘hotspot’ areas, including Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, and Nyanga. As a safety precaution, staff members have been advised not to enter these areas at night in government vehicles unless accompanied by a police escort.
