The announcement follows years of lobbying from telecommunications firms and various civic organisations for ICASA to issue the high-demand spectrum. For years, operators have called for spectrum licences to lower data costs and meet the increasing demand for data. ICASA says the March 2022 spectrum auction is a milestone in South Africa's communications history as it will be the first-ever spectrum auction.
