Security forces clamp down on anti-govt protests in Zimbabwe eNCA

Heavy-handed police in Zimbabwe have arrested several activists, including the MDC-Alliance's national spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere, in a shut-down on anti-government protests. Zimbabweans are frustrated over corruption and President Emmerson Mnangagwa's failure to turn around the economy.

In Bulawayo and central Harare, the capital, businesses were shut as police and soldiers patrolled the streets. Shops also stayed shut in some Harare townships, including Mbare - a hotbed of past protests. His ZANU-PF party this week branded the US ambassador in Harare a"thug," accusing him of funding protests. Brian Nichols has criticised the government for failing to tackle corruption and for persecuting opponents.

Popular anger has risen over an economic crisis marked by inflation running above 700%, shortages of foreign currency, and public hospitals crippled by strikes and a lack of medicine.Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said main opposition spokeswoman Fadzayi Mahere and novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga were among five people arrested for inciting public violence after protesting in their neighbourhood.
