Scholar patrols deployed to 10 Sedibeng schools to ensure pupils' safety

In an effort to reduce the high number of children who die in road incidents, ten schools in the Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng will have patrollers under an initiative launched by the Road Traffic Management Corporation in partnership with Santam.

According to the latest State of Road Safety Report of January-December 2022 by the RTMC, the fatal accidents decreased by 1.5%, from 10 607 in 2021 to 10 446 in 2022, while the fatalities decreased by 0.8%, from 12 541 in 2021 to 12 436 in 2022. Khoza said the safety patrollers on duty would be properly trained and provided with appropriate uniforms and equipment, such as umbrellas and raincoats, during the rainy season. The project has the potential to prepare youth for future careers in road safety, traffic police and general law enforcement. This project is one of many initiatives that we will plug into the existing community enhancement structures to achieve our broader goal of building communities that are more resilient.

The spokesperson also said that Santam collaborated with RTMC to identify areas with a high number of pupils walking to school and where there was high traffic.
