Congolese went to the polls on December 30 in the third democratic election for the country since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960.

South African ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo Abel Shilubane said on Tuesday that the presence of the South African army in the rebel-prone country was “disturbing a lot of people” who have ulterior motives.

Shilubane encouraged the South African soldiers to serve their mission with integrity and honesty as principles espoused by Mandela, saying South Africa was enjoying some degree of “soft power” for being an honest body in stabilising governments in Africa. Master Chief Warrant Officer Mothusi Kgaladi concurred with Shilubane that there were forces hard at work to dislodge the South African peacekeeping mission in DRC, but urged his soldiers to be disciplined in light of sexual misconduct against some of them.

But Shilubane said that South Africa was an “honest broker” of peace in the DRC and that it would continue to manage conflict in the country until peace was restored. Congolese went to the polls on December 30 – the third democratic election for the country since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960. After much controversy, Felix Tshisekedi was declared winner with 38.5 percent of the vote.
