South Sudan has the third-largest oil reserves in Sub-Saharan Africa, estimated at 3.5-billion barrels

SA’s state-owned Strategic Fuel Fund has begun exploration efforts in South Sudan in search of oil and gas, which the entity hopes will ensure the country’s energy security for years to come.

The SFF and South Sudan’s national oil and gas company, Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited , signed an agreement last week allowing the former to use the latter’s geophysical planes, in a move that kicked off exploration activities in the “highly-prospective B2 Block”...

South Sudan's economy is dependent on its oil exports, which Haysom noted go out via Port Sudan. Their interruption could have devastating effects on the economy. After independence from Sudan in July 2011, South Sudan slid into more than five years of civil war, with forces loyal to President Salva Kiir battling supporters of Vice President Riek Machar. Thousands of people died in the war, and more than 2 million fled to neighbouring countries, including Sudan. Since mid-April 2023, when a rivalry between two Sudanese generals turned into open conflict, more than 117,000 people crossed back into South Sudan, seeking safety.

What Next For Sudan as End of 72-Hour Ceasefire Looms?Sudan's latest ceasefire ends on June 20, 2023. Since the April 15, 2023 outbreak of hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) the country has seen tremendous human suffering and death, worsening existing humanitarian needs. In recent developments, Sudan's Vice President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council Malik Agar hailed Egypt's participation in the initiative to end the crisis. There are also an increase in the disappearances of people in Sudan - thus far over 200 people have been reported missing - among them are 15 women who have been taken.
