SA's 'coffin on wheels' taxis are finally due to be outlawed entirely, by February

Toyota Quantum panel vans converted into passenger-carrying taxis have been described as"coffins with wheels".And it's"contributed to fatal accidents that occurred around the country," according to the Public Protector.

More than 15 years after South Africa's department of transport became aware of illegally converted panel vans being used to ferry passengers, a final deadline has been set to rid the country's roads of these dangerous taxis. The panel vans, designed to carry goods and a maximum of three passengers, had seats bolted onto the thin floors instead of onto the chassis, while windows cut into the body further compromised the vehicle's structural integrity.

Scrapping of these illegally converted panel vans has been done through the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme. Owners are currently paid R141,000 per minibus taxi vehicle offered to the scrap yard.

TRANSPORT WOES: Santaco threatens to take 15,000 taxis off streets if Blue Dot pilot project is haltedTaxi organisation Santaco has threatened to take its 15,000 minibus taxis off Western Cape streets, leaving about two million commuters stranded, if the Western Cape government does not reconsider its decision to halt a successful pilot project. Please go ahead. Life will be bliss without 15000 taxis on the Road. If you need a gardner, handyman or cleaner, please consider me 🙏. You can even use me as a servant boy doing any odd jobs 🙏. Just as long as I feed my family. My children have been sleeping hungry for almost a week now and I feel helpless as a father💔😔 It's a lie and how are they going to pay for their taxis as they rely on commuters?
