A ground-breaking expedition to cross Antarctica was abandoned in 1915, when the iconic vessel was crushed by pack ice and sunk to the bottom of the Weddell Sea.
A South African helicopter company will supply two choppers, which will drop remote controlled underwater vehicles tasked with locating the Endurance.More than a century ago, an iconic expedition vessel sank off the coast of Antarctica. Now, a team aboard the SA Agulhas II, with support from a South African helicopter business, is going in search of the Endurance.
But the Endurance encountered trouble almost immediately after leaving South Georgia en route to Antarctica's Weddell Sea. Thick pack ice, far higher north than expected, forced the Endurance to manoeuvre and progress became slow.
