Residents of Atlantis are being urged to remain vigilant and report any instances of extortion threats targeting waste collection services in the area. While operations are currently running smoothly, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate strongly condemns any attempts to disrupt waste collection services through extortion tactics.
Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, emphasised the importance of community involvement in safeguarding these services.‘It is imperative that we work together to protect our waste collection service in Atlantis. Threats of extortion not only jeopardise the safety of our staff but also hinder service delivery to our residents. We urge the community to report any such incidents promptly.’ In response to these threats, the City initiated a city-wide Anti-Extortion Campaign in October 2023. The campaign aims to combat extortion through various measures, including the establishment of a dedicated hotline for reporting incidents
