Twenty-three others were disqualified after failing to meet all set requirements.

On Wednesday, almost all the eligible parties signed a compulsory pledge binding them to the promotion of conditions conducive to free and fair elections.With 19 more political parties to process this time around than in the previous election – the IEC’s organisational skills were stretched to the limit.

One by one, presidential hopefuls took turns committing their respective parties to a climate of tolerance, free political campaigning and open public debate.
