South Africans need to remember that many of the ‘foreigners’ who live in their country lost loved ones during the fight against apartheid – violence against them is unacceptable, writes Ericino de Salema
In responding to the levels of frustration caused by inequality and social exclusion, those in power in South Africa should take a leaf from Ted Gurr’s 1970 book Why Men Rebel. He argues that, while frustration itself does not lead to political violence, it grows into anger and boils over into aggression when it is prolonged.
“Everybody just arrives in our townships and rural areas and sets up business without licences and permits. We are going to bring this to an end,” Ramaphosa told a crowd of supporters. Is it a coincidence that, soon after this speech, the police swooped through the townships, targeting those who had been alluded to by Ramaphosa?
What Ramaphosa did not say in his cynical, brief statement is that some of those foreign nationals who are working and/or based in South Africa lost their loved ones as a result of attacks by apartheid security forces in Mozambican cities like Maputo and Matola. They are doing so by inflating capital costs and operating costs, using abusive and unethical transfer pricing practices and contributing far less to the public coffers through taxes than they had promised.
What Ramaphosa did not say is that he failed to uphold the Constitution, under which it is his ultimate duty to protect the life and dignity of every human being in South Africa, regardless of their nationality and status.
But its just too much and its different
