Ramaphosa’s R350 grant not enough – economic justice group

The relief measures recently announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa will not be enough to prevent hunger, quell further civil disorder and put South Africa on a path to recovery.

PMBEJD programme coordinator Mervyn Abrahams said that, even though government had showed greater commitment to provide relief to households, workers and small businesses, it still felt like “we are trying to pull blood out of stone”. Abrahams said that, while it appeared that peace had been restored for now, the conditions that provided fertile ground for unrest have not improved.

The PMBEJD proposed that government’s relief measures need to be reassessed. Socioeconomic conditions on the ground, the organisation said, were untenable and considerably worse than they were even three weeks ago – and far worse than they were early last year, when a broad range of relief measures were offered to households.

The old-age grant be used as a mechanism to transfer income into households as it has been the anchor in households and kept families alive, and it must be increased to R2 500; and
