President Cyril Ramaphosa fully stamped his authority in the ANC during the meeting of the national executive committee at the weekend, after the party endorsed a letter he had written to members last week

The NEC further agreed with his assessment that the party had to draw a line in the sand against corruption and take immediate action against those implicated in serious misconduct.

• Those who are convicted of corruption or other serious crimes must resign from leadership positions and face disciplinary action. In a comment that showed Zuma’s diminished influence in the party leadership, Ramaphosa said he would not respond to his predecessor’s letter because it was just one of many letters that he received.

He then turned the tables on Ramaphosa, saying he needed to come clean on his business interests and rise to power. Deputy President David Mabuza said that he had met with the integrity commission, but that this “was done with some discomfort”.
