President Cyril Ramaphosa has thrown a lifeline to advocate Mahlodi Muofhe, head of the domestic branch the State Security Agency, by extending his stay with the agency until at least next year

, head of the domestic branch the State Security Agency , by extending his stay with the agency until at least next year.

Although the planned structural changes had been expected to be concluded by the beginning of last month, which marked the expiry of Muofhe’s previous contract, the SSA indicated that it was not time-bound. At the pinnacle of his troubles in the SSA, Muofhe faced off with State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo over an alleged “unlawful instruction” to intercept a suspicious mobile phone communication during the last xenophobic outbreak.

Muofhe’s sympathisers said any person who was not a career securocrat would have similarly struggled to crack it into the agency, where experience and historical relationships are highly valued.
