Johannesburg - They were supposed to be a new development putting people living in squalor in the old apartheid-era hostels in housing that would give them the dignity they had been deprived of for so long.
Vandals had already taken whatever they thought could be of value then as some doors were missing and almost every window had been broken. One resident who was supposed to be one of the beneficiaries of Dube Hostel, Zongendaba Shabangu, said the structures were vandalised because the government want people to pay R750 a month to rent them. However, they feel that it is too steep for their pockets.
“Subsequently, they refused to occupy the units, also refusing anyone from outside hostels access to the units. Some of these units have also been invaded, evicting illegal occupants is proving to be a challenge. “Appointment of professionals to quantify the costs will be done in the first quarter of 2021/22 financial year. Therefore, the costs will be known once the professionals have completed the quantification exercise.
MbuyiseniNdlozi I’m back with smile on my face again thanks to LisateddyBTC I don’t know what to say I was skeptical but I am proud to let the world know that you’re the reason behind my successful trades life!!🙏🙏🙏🙏 God bless you for your good work
Minenhl2020 The money never got down the drain but went straight to few ANC Tsotsis's pockets
MbuyiseniNdlozi It's every day story AMASELA
FloydShivambu Much disconnect with beneficiary communities and off taker program. The pic shows not great building and layout and no balcony, like intent for poor people only when social programs could be units in middle income blocks not whole blocks for one income only.
FloydShivambu Maybe Anc comdrades they were waiting for some cash to buy and becoming Landlords
MbuyiseniNdlozi Very Bad indeed😂😂😂😂Something must and must be done!!
I stay not far from Dube hostel and I can tell you that there are some units that have been repaired as we speak but that's the least of my concerns. My issue is there isn't a single day where you don't hear gunshots coming from that hostel..
MbuyiseniNdlozi Black people and their love for freebies 🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️
Anc was wrong to campaign using government project and telling people its going to be free. Nothing is for free. Instead of wasting money and let these projects go to waste, government should engage with the community and map a way forward
CyrilRamaphosa PresidencyZA
Lol
koko_matshela U won't speak of such cause we all know why. U've been paid wena
CadreEconomy & AncCorruption inje- these images are a legacy of ANC regime
FloydShivambu Thabisoo what have we done to deserve this MYANC ?
These ppl have political power to change this nonsense.. Unfortunately hey... They wil keep on experiencing such nonsense
FloydShivambu This country is heading for a disaster. Even socialist countries have never managed to provide sufficient free housing, electricity and water. It's all dreams. Our tax base is dwindling by the day. Eskom is dying too. It's only a matter of time. Corruption is another accelerent.
FloydShivambu Hostels in 20th century
Destroy hostels and problem solved
FloydShivambu Welcome to the land of entitlement
I have seen only Dube the rest are occupied
FloydShivambu Mos housing is cheap...I mean money for washing covid19 hands was more than double that in less than a year. If people can wash hands with half a billion then why demand rent from the people.
Thats a lie your investigating journalist is a fraud as those flats have more than 15 yrs being there and not working, stop reporting lies do your research
Wotshela1 Isnt Diepkloof the home of the DA? If so, the newly formed DANC can revive this...not
And this ladies and gentlemen, is why there will be calls to redress injustices of the past 100 years from now!!!
Who's problem is this. They must celebrate because is what they voted for. They deserve it they mustn't came here to irritate us. When they voted ANC, what was they expectations.
Dube hostel is such a sorry site, it was stripped to bare. Painful.
They've damaged those units themselves, because they didn't want to pay a cent. So their on their own those once.
But the people who were supposed to move into these flats, wanted to move in for free yet they were expected to pay about 700 rand a month.
Something similar is loading in Olievenhoutbos even though this time the units have been invaded by the community before being competed.
Clearly no feasibility study was undertaken as this would have included a full market study and stakeholder survey. Wonder if this has now been done, or it’s simply going to be a case of throwing good money after bad. Amateurs 🙄
Wasted 10 years .
Misdirected funds subjecting our people to further apartheid concentration camps called townships, while some Joburg City buildings are lying idle or occupied by paperless thugs. Evacuate those thugs, renovate city buildings and get people closer to their workplaces. Think ANC
In this instance we can't fully blame the government. The intended beneficiaries refused to move into these units due to payment of rent and they also stopped and intimidated people who were willing to occupy these units and pay the required rent.

Viva ANC. Banyise Khongolose. They keep voting for your abuse. Nyisa wena ANC
HadebeM2 Let's blame the whites again for this.
Gauteng GautengProvince 💔💔
The way to punish a useless government like the ANC is to vote them out. On the contrary they are returned to power after each election having mismanaged governance. Therefore there are no consequences for them. And generally there are no consequences for wrongdoing in SA
They don't look complete. Were they expecting people to occupy them in this condition?
The only way is to involve private investors. Free housing has not work we just have to pay
phethani4 Also in mafikeng
Sad.
In this case the problem is the recipients they don't want to pay R750 rent They must continue in sqaulor
THE WAY THEY LIKE IT
ANC
We are quick to blame government, but at times it's the people who just want everything for free. Government is to blame for promising what it couldn't deliver and people need to stop expecting free shit. 750 a month for a livable home is a bargain
SaaymanBarry why is it hostels and not flats.
Baas Verwoerd and Baas Botha told you - you can't govern for shit. 😁😂
Not condoning anything, but the other race right now.
Yet they want land now. Land promises is the only way this pathetic government can use to hide their total incompetence.
Beneficiaries are to blame for this mess
Nothing new, ANC government at their best
And when people occupy them, they’ll b considered invaders. I recently saw a school built in swamp water in Thembisa - how’s that even possible?
Expected that
Just like Gugulethu, Nyanga & Langa hostels that need to be developed to be decent houses. DA always say they govern better in the WC but living conditions of Black people are still bad. Even national government does not care. Positions come first to them
But you will pay R750 to live in backyard shack when you could have had a new serviced apartment? Vandalism is becoming a sickness in South Africa! DiepslootHostel SowetoHostels
That's Government (ANC) at it's best
That's a black government for u, where even life is taken casually. All houses and flats that were built by NP were finished and occupied. And still stand strong even today. 🤔
Viva
Any property safeguard and security appointed. Risk should be minimized, insurance won't a accept vandelised property claims where there was no security, property empty for 3 months. Risk for paying for monthly insurance premiums vandelized properties its a wasteful expenditure

i personally know of a guy that i work with that was to move into these hostels the problem started when they were told that ,they would rent to own these hostels for 5 years were the old hostels they pay nothing so thy choose to stay with the old hostels

SAVoice3
MYANC's banana republic 😏
Noo everyday we hear how the country is literally being torn down with not a peep from gorvmnt.
We are used with this waste of taxpayers money now
Another project that cost the peoe of SA. These hostel for the people of informal settlements. Informal settlements are unhygienic
So who must be charged for oversight?
South Africa, because of it's governance, is a fucking joke!
There's a problem when govt wants to be a business, a landlord in this case. Same collapse will happen with state ownwd bank, mines, pharmaceutical co...it happened with etolls too. They're unable to can!🙄
Why am I not even slightly surprised? Shameful
