Almost 900 of these were at public entities, while allegations of malfeasance at national departments were about five times less.

JOHANNESBURG - The Public Service Commission said it received over a thousand complaints of alleged corruption at government departments from the first to the third quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year.

At provincial government the PSC saw the highest number of complaints from whistleblowers in Gauteng, the Western Cape, Northern Cape and KZN. While other provinces recorded fewer complaints, PSC Commissioner Anele Gxoyiya said he is still worried about the trends. "For example in the Eastern Cape, where in the first quarter there were no complaints but in the second quarter there were complaints. this means, instead of us maintaining the status quo of no complaints, there is an increase."

Despite a majority of the cases being finalised, Gxoyiya warns that unwarranted delays jeopardise investigations.
