Machaka, who is a die-hard Kaizer Chiefs supporter and Miladinovic, who is a well-known Orlando Pirates fan, have been appointed as ambassadors of Amathole Funerals. The funeral parlour is owned by Durban businessperson Vezokuhle Nala. Both fans have been unemployed for more than 10 years. Machaka and Miladinovic said it was their first salary paying job since they both lost their jobs as a result of their commitment to football.
“I lost my job at VW in 2008 after I was absent from work due to football. I have been unemployed ever since and it has really been difficult. I am grateful for this opportunity given to me by Mr Nala. It’s the first time I’m getting a salary in more than 12 years,” Masilo said. “The last time I had a job was in 2010 when I worked at a Spar supermarket. It was just before the Fifa World Cup. I had asked for leave to watch the games and it was denied,” Miladinovic said.
“I decided that I was not going to miss the World Cup and that’s how I got fired. People thought I was getting paid to go to stadiums and so on but that’s not the case. It has been a big challenge and I have been living off donations from people. I am really happy that finally I got a real job.”It has been a year since fans have been barred from attending games at the stadium. It remains to be seen if spectators will be allowed back any time soon.
“Football is still our passion even though it has cost us a lot. When the ban is lifted we will continue to go to the stadiums to support our teams. But this time we will be a bit smarter and will not sacrifice our jobs for football,” Machaka said.
