This after municipal health inspectors last week found that five food outlets in the east of Pretoria are contributing to pollution at the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary, reportsAccording to a report by the inspectors, the outlets are in violation of city bylaws for dumping solid waste such as fat into the Walkerspruit in Brooklyn.“The solid waste wash areas and housekeeping [at the restaurants in question] are not meeting city bylaw requirements,” the report said.
The report stated the problem been going on for several years now, and that the pollution control section has been trying to resolve the problem and come up with corrective measures. The report cited other problems such as vagrants staying underneath a building next to the storm-water channel.A public meeting will be held on Wednesday to discuss the matter.Meyer said he welcomed the report, and hoped more inspections would be done.
“We must stop this from happening in the first place rather than simply reacting to situations when damage has already been done.”
