This comes amid fears that the death of an 18-month-old toddler in Kariega in the Eastern Cape might have been caused by contaminated water provided by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
In December, 23 such cases were treated at the Dora Nginza Hospital, the Mabandla Clinic and the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.We’re not in a position to confirm what led to the cases that were reported, but, generally, such infections happen when people consume water that’s been contaminated by faeces from humans or animals.
Regarding the death of the child in Nelson Mandela Bay and the illness of many others, Ratau said the challenges in that municipality were different in that the water quality there had been affected by the drought and low reserves. City Press reported earlier this week that, as of last Sunday, 14 cases of typhoid had been reported in Cape Town, 11 in the Cape winelands and 12 along the Garden Route.In North West, 21 cases had been recorded, mainly in Klerksdorp and its surrounding areas.
The party has also written to the Public Protector and the SA Human Rights Commission requesting urgent investigations into the matter.
