The media group is a special purpose vehicle set up six years ago to buy out Independent Media SA from its Irish owners.

Sekunjalo Independent Media says the application is part of a series of co-ordinated attacks on Independent Media, and ultimately, an attack on media freedom.

While the media group is a separate entity, it falls under Sekunjalo Investment Holdings, Cape Town businessmanThe PIC, briefing Parliament in mid-October, said it would consider submitting an application for the liquidation of Sekunjalo due to the non-payment of interest on debt.
