Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines may be sold to other countries or used before they expire, options being considered

This as the ministerial advisory committee, as well as leading scientists involved in local vaccine studies, continues to deliberate over the next best step to take with the 1 million Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines, whose distribution has been suspended.

“We will consider mainly that, first, our scientists must tell us what to do with them – can we use them within the time available [before the expiry date of April 30]? We’ll consider whether can we swap them with anyone else and we can then do so because we have discussed with the Covax facility and the African vaccine acquisition task team in the African Union. So, we will see. As to what we ultimately do, we can assure you there will be no wasteful expenditure,” Mkhize said.

At a webinar on Tuesday night, Madhi said that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was similar to the J&J vaccine in terms of the technology used to construct it and the immune responses from both were almost identical. Johnson & Johnson has also made rolling submissions to the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority to ensure their application with the regulator is reviewed with the latest data available.

The implementation study will monitor the hospitalisation rates following vaccination and, if low, the distribution will expand to the wider community.
