Turok, a long-serving former ANC MP, recently served as director of the Institute for African Alternatives and editor of the journal New Agenda. Turok was one of the contributors to the Freedom Charter, and he always spoke about how June 26 was a double celebration for him - his birthday and also the date on which the charter was adopted in 1955.

RIP benturok so often you so truth to authority even within your own party. South Africa has lost one of the conscience of the nation. I was privileged to work with Prof. Turok. He was both knowledgable and progressive, always ready to speak his mind, even against orthodoxy within and outside the ANC. RIP Cde Turok.
